Mr. Schmitt was one of my favorites. Though I was not a great chemistry student, he was patient, very helpful and always a nice guy. After a career on Capitol Hill, I was appointed senior advisor to the CFO at the Department of Energy where we worked with the top nuclear scientists at the national labs. I always had to chuckle thinking his mouth would have dropped seeing me talking with these folks about their programs. While I still didn't understand much, every once in a while something he taught me would help me understand a miniscule amount of what they were talking about. Louie Schmitt was a highly competent and gifted teacher, and a person I have valued highly throughout my career. Congratulations my friend on a life and career well lived!

He was a great teacher and demonstrated his care for his students.  We gave him some kidding about coming from Cissna Park, IL, a small town just to the South.   Jim Marzano and I put a short film together of the highlights of Cissna Park.  Lou had us show it to several of his classes.  He made a difference in his students lives.  He will be missed.

Don, your comments about Mr Schmitt put things into perspective. What a difference a great teacher makes...most often unknowingly...in the lives of his/her students. Wonderful tribute. Wonderful vision of the impact of one committed person.

He was simply a great teacher, like so many we were blessed to have.  He knew how to get the best out of you, never too busy for tutuoring one on one.  Thank God he also had a sense of humor, especially when so many of us thought it funny to connect the gas jet to the water spouts.  Joe and I had a great day with him in Cissna Park taking that movie, just too bad we didn't have YouTube in those days!

Rest in Peace, Mr. Schmitt

Mr. Schmitt was truly a great teacher.  He let us learn!  He seemed to find out how you learned and then taught it.  Everyone seemed to have a good time in his class.  I hope that his family will take peace in knowing what he meant to his students and how he touched our lives.

Like those of you who have already posted, Mr. Schmitt was one of my favorite teachers at RE. I had him for chem my sophomore year, in a diverse class of sophomores, juniors and seniors, some of whom were determined to take advantage of this young teacher. We would often start the hour with a quote one of a few students would write on the board. He let us have our fun for a few minutes, always with a smile, and sometimes joining in the fun, and then we got down to work. Although it might not have scored perfect marks from a teaching supervisor, it set a good example for me as a teacher of how to get a class to be with you, that I have used, though not as well as he did. I would occasionally stop to talk with Mr. Schmitt at the U. of Illinois library in the summer, when he was taking grad courses. He was never too busy to stop and chat and catch up. The last time I talked with him was at the All School Reunion in 2003. I met his wife of 50 years for the first time. Then, he was spending a lot of time taking care of his parents. This was something with which I could further relate. I had hoped to see him at our reunion last year, but I heard he was not doing well. I hesitated to seek out more information, fearing things might have gotten worse. It was a few weeks ago that I decided to check the internet. Sadly, his notice of passing came up almost instantly. It indicated that he passed on almost a month after our reunion on Oct. 26. As sad as I felt after seeing this, it helped to know that he had 20 years of retirement, in which it seemed he traveled and enjoyed life. I will dearly miss him and be thankful to him for all who taught me as a teacher, role model, and person.

Lou Schmitt will be missed.  I had him for both General Chemistry and AP Chemistry.  He looked a bit like my father as a younger man.  Like my Dad, Mr. Schmitt was a chemist who later became an administrator. Rich East was fortunate to have him both as a chemistry teacher and later as principal. When I got to college, I whizzed through my first chemistry class thanks to his excellent high school teaching.  Although I lost touch with him in the end, we had many years of close interactions which I cherish deeply.
