My Good friend Furgs

I think it was one Friday, Fresh or Soph year, that you walked into class with a varsity letter on your sweater.  I looked at you and thought how could some punky ass, tall skinny kid, in need of some sunshine on that pasty white body, have lettered in anything.  I soon found out what you were all about.

Never, did I hear you disparage anyone, regardless of color, ethnicity, or religion.  Never, did I know you to not be a gentleman to women.  Never, did I know you to disparage an opponent.  You were the micro/macrocosm of the good of Rich East Class of 1965 and the city of Park Forest.

I had known you sightly from 8th grade at Westwood, but got to know you better each year in school, and the years thereafter. I was fortunate, that for being such an obnoxious ass that invented the words terror and bully, YOU chose to be a friend. You, Paul, Steve, Al, Jack, Bruce, Tony, and more attempted to take positive energy and put into helping me through some awkward years in school.

I remember when you would climb out your window and to steal your parents light blue 4 door Ford to cruise late night weekends.

I remember the prom picture that we both were standing with white tuxedos in front of my Father's new maroon Ford, Quieter than a Rolls Royce.

I remember the red headed coed that you chased for a couple of years.

I remember when we came up from the gym to find you virtually unconscious in the whrlpool and we pulled you out.

I remember that you always encouraged me, even when I would be wrong about something.

I remember sitting in the back seat of Mert's car as you continued to drink the small cans of malt liquor, and me telling you to drink more.  It was fantastic when you told me that you were going to BARF.  I told you to stick your head out the window, but somehow I failed to tell you to make sure the window was down.  Blown cookies all over!

I remember the night in Feb of 1966 when you were driving my Pontiac convert, at 3 AM on 57.  A semi truck ran us off the road and the car spun around and hit the 167th overpass embankment.  By God's Grace, we were spaired.  I jumped into the drivers seat befor the police came.  I was so frightened, but more petrified that I might have an insurance issue if it was known that you were driving.  We never spoke of that again.

I remember you coming over the Sunday after my Father died.   You spent time with my Mother, and sisters watching the Bear's game.

I remember you being my date on Sundays when I had my Bear tickets and prior to meeting Alyce, my love forever.

I remember you being my Best Man.

I remember your kindnest always.

Today, as irony would have it, the Bears are in Tampa.  Alyce and two of my boys will be at the game.  We will toast you, the Bears, and the Class of 1965.

Thank you Rodger for being the good person, in fact, the better person!!!

Very sorry to hear about Rodger.  My memories of Rodger are very vivid.  When I saw him at school, I could not believe some as tall as him, wrestled in such a low weight.    Also, to this day, whenever I used my TK initials, I think of Rodger.  This is because he started calling me that in drafting class.  No one had ever done that and he might be the only person whoever called me TK.

Just spoke with Bob Peele and he told me about Rodger s  untimely death.  He was a great classmate as well as a great wrestler and team mate.  When Rodger put the legs in you knew you were in trouble.  I am deeply saddened about his passing.

I am shocked and saddened. Roger and I were good buddies on the wrestling team, and I always enjoyed our friendship. A good friend of mine that flew with me in the military for many years died in 1997 of brain cancer with Glioblastoma cells. I hope Roger didn't suffer! My condolences to his family.

Rodger was a close friend, a gentleman and a class act. He was like a brother. We used to wrestle together and hang out. What a great friend. You will always be missed

Roger passed away almost 2 years ago.  I think of Roger and so many like him, that we knew and grew up with, went to school with and took for granted.  Roger was always nice and friendly like so many others.  And then they leave us. This certainly makes us reflect on our lives, the good and the bad, the good decisions and bad ones we made.  May Roger be blessed in heaven.
